A Brief History

In the early 1970s there was considerable interest in the preservation of the county's rich heritage and historical memorabilia. On February 22, 1973 a group of twelve citizens from Clarkesville, Cornelia and Demorest, interested in the formation of an historical society, met at Piedmont College. At this meeting it was felt that there was a definite interest and need for such an organization and they agreed to begin the necessary steps to form a Habersham County Historical Society. J.O. Bailey was appointed Temporary President and Jodie Burton was appointed Temporary Secretary. Then at the organizational meeting held in April they were elected to serve in those positions. Herbert Kimzey and Claude Purcell were also instrumental in getting the society organized. [ . . . ] stay tuned for more!
